CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

DESTINY CLIMBS OFF her bike in the shade of an oak tree in Mr. Pryce’s driveway. The crescent moon isn’t bright, but she needs to stay in the shadows. She imagines she’s a ninja assassin in her black leggings and dark hoodie pulled tightly over her chestnut-brown ringlets.

She’s forgotten to wear gloves, but that may be a good thing, considering how much she’s sweating. It’s too warm to be wearing a long-sleeved sweatshirt. Her nerves are already on fire.

She initially had grand plans to make Pryce pay for the classroom humiliation. Some of her ideas involved small explosions, but now she has scaled back and simply intends to load up his trees with toilet paper.

Even that task has her on edge.

Without a helper, she will be forced to dash from one side of the tree to the other, tossing the roll to herself. If anyone sees her, she’ll need to cycle away as fast as she can.

With that in mind, she leans her bike against the trunk of a giant oak, one of her proposed targets. Her first step is to check that Pryce is in for the night. It would be a disaster if he came home at the wrong moment. She shudders at the thought.

The sight of an old blue Toyota parked in the driveway piques her interest. Staying in the shadows, she moves stealthily up the side of the house and peers inside the car. The dream catcher hanging from the rearview mirror means it most likely belongs to a woman. Pryce has female company, and Destiny knows it isn’t her mother.

The door to the stand-alone garage is down. But Destiny gets up on tiptoes and aims her flashlight through a side window. Pryce’s truck is there. It’s safe for her to decorate his trees. Unless the visitor leaves when she’s tossing toilet rolls in the air.

She silently lifts the latch to the gate. The creak when it opens isn’t loud enough to alert anyone inside the house.

Like before, the curtains on the downstairs windows are wide open, spilling light across the lawn. She hears music, soft and moody. Romantic, maybe.

Ducking behind a shrub, she parts the leaves until she can see into the room. The girl sitting on the couch beside Mr. Pryce is a high school senior. Katie Castro is eighteen, but what the heck is she doing with a guy old enough to be her dad?

Destiny has brought her mom’s compact binoculars, but she feels like a peeping tom as she lifts them to her eyes and scans the room. Pryce and Katie seem to be chatting amicably, but is it a prelude to something else?

She wishes she could read lips and figure out what the pair are doing together. She takes a picture with her phone, but at this distance, it is impossible to recognize their faces. It’s too risky to move closer, but she will reconsider if they start getting physical. Sharing an image online of Pryce screwing a student would be more than sufficient revenge.
